The Counseling ProcessMaking the decision to seek counseling requires courage. However, some of the anxiety in making such an important decision can be relieved with enough information and an understanding of how the process works. Here are some aspects of counseling and therapy as I practice it:
Confidentiality and Ethical PracticeOne of the most important and fundamental aspect of the counseling relationship concerns the confidential nature of the information that you share with me. Generally, I will tell no one what you tell me. The privacy and confidentiality of our conversations and my records is a privilege of yours and is protected by state law and my profession's ethical principles (ACA Code of Ethics) in all but a few circumstances. There are two circumstances in which I cannot guarantee confidentiality, legally and/or ethically: (1) when I believe you intend to harm yourself or another person; and (2) when I believe a child or elder person has been or will be abused or neglected. In rare circumstances, Professional Counselors can be ordered by a judge to release information. Otherwise, I will not tell anyone anything about your treatment, diagnosis, history, or even that you are a client, without your full knowledge and usually a signed Release of Information Form. TerminationThe decision to terminate counseling services normally occurs when you and I jointly determine that the major goals of counseling have been achieved. Other situations where termination of services may occur include: when I determine that counseling services are no longer needed and/or are ineffective for you; if I determine that another mental health professional is needed to provide specialized care; upon non-payment of fees; or if two sessions are missed without notice. Fees/Methods of PaymentTypical fees for services include $180 per intake session and $120 per individual counseling session. In addition, most managed care companies will pay for my services directly. For example, we are preferred providers for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Medicaid, MedCost, and Aetna. If you are covered by one of these insurance companies, I will collect the appropriate co-payment at the time of services are rendered and file the appropriate forms. Cash, Credit Cards or personal checks are acceptable for payment. 425 Spring Garden St. • Greensboro, NC 27406 • (336) 379-0199 |
